Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

In a game with massive implications in the standings, every member of the Brandon Wheat Kings showed up in a big way.

Five different Wheat Kings scored, with Brett Hyland scoring twice, as the Wheat Kings took down the Lethbridge Hurricanes 6-0. Carter Klippenstein, Nolan Flamand, Charlie Elick, and Dominik Petr also scored in the win, while Ethan Eskit made 38 saves for his first career shutout.

"There were maybe some nerves in the first ten minutes of the game, but overall I thought it was a good effort," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "We had 20 guys going, and we talked about not having any passengers tonight, and other than a few little blips I thought we played a really solid game."

A back and forth first period that saw 11 shots each way and some grade-A chances for the Hurricanes ended with the Wheat Kings up 1-0. Off a scramble caused by a Roger McQueen shot, Hyland found the loose puck and stuffed it home.

While it has been a tougher period for them through much of the season, the Wheat Kings owned the second period this time around. First, Klippenstein drove the net and knocked home the rebound of a shot by Hayden Wheddon. Then, on the game's first power play, Flamand found the puck out of a scramble and flipped home his 11th of the season.

Elick put a bow on the second period when he crept in from the point, found the puck at the top of the right circle, and wired home his fourth of the season following another net drive that turned into bedlam in the Hurricane's crease. Early in the third, Petr put the game well out of reach when, on a 2-on-1, he kept the puck for himself and sniped home his 10th.

Hyland bookended the scoring with another power play goal in the third. Another McQueen shot generated a rebound and Hyland was right there to bunt home his team-leading 23rd goal of the campaign.

The Wheat Kings don't have long to savor the win as they get right back to work on Sunday with a matinee affair against the Medicine Hat Tigers. Puck drop is 4:00.
