Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Lethbridge, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings took a 3-0 stranglehold in their first-round series with the Lethbridge Hurricanes after a commanding 4-1 win in game three at the Enmax Centre, powered by a three-point night from Jalen Luypen.

For the third straight game in this series, the Oil Kings would strike first and this time, they wouldn't wait until the second period as just 2:21 into the game, Luypen quieted the Lethbridge crowd.

Simon Kubicek sent a stretch pass from his own zone the length of the ice, and after missing his intended target, the puck caromed hard off the pads of Bryan Thomson and into the slot where Carter Souch quickly snapped a shot towards the net that Luypen would tip home for his second goal of the post-season.

The Oil Kings peppered 16 more shots the way of Thomson in the opening 20 minutes but couldn't solve him for a second time. Meanwhile, late in the period, the Hurricanes began to pushback getting seven shots of their own on the Edmonton net, but Sebastian Cossa came up with a handful of tricky pad saves to keep his team ahead 1-0 at the intermission.

In the second period, the Oil Kings struck quickly again as just under two minutes into the middle stanza, Kaiden Guhle extended the Edmonton lead to 2-0 after he took a drop pass from Josh Williams on an odd-man rush into the Lethbridge zone and from the slot he whistled a low shot past Thomson.

Souch increased the Edmonton lead just past the halfway mark of the period with a power play marker as he tipped in a Luke Prokop point shot for his second goal of the post-season.

The Oil King were given a late four-minute power play after a Hurricane skater was flagged for a high-stick that drew blood from Justin Sourdif, but Edmonton couldn't cash-in, settling for the three-goal lead after 40 minutes.

In the third period, Yegor Klavdiev would breathe life into the Hurricanes as he snapped home a power play marker just over three minutes into the period to cut the deficit to two, but less than three minutes later, Dylan Guenther would snuff out any hope of a comeback for the Hurricanes as he stripped a puck in the slot and lasered a wrist shot over the right arm of Thomson to restore the Oil Kings three-goal advantage.

Cossa finished the night making 25 saves while Thomson registered 34 for Lethbridge. The Oil Kings went 1-for-6 on the power play, the Hurricanes were 1-for-5.

Next up, Game 4 of the series goes Thursday night in Lethbridge at 7:00 PM.
