Hawks Take 3-0 Series Lead in First Round Playoff Matchup

April 27, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - Gabe Klassen scored twice, Taylor Gauthier turned aside all 28 shots that came his way and the Portland Winterhawks knocked off the Prince George Cougars 2-0 at CN Centre to go up 3-0 in their first-round WHL Playoffs series.

Gauthier's shutout was his first in his postseason career and Portland's first in the playoffs since Adin Hill stopped 21 shots in a 3-0 win over Seattle on March 29, 2015.

A testy affair finally got its first goal early in the second period when Klassen wired home Portland's first of the night at 3:39. Klassen collected the puck in the offensive zone before laying it off for James Stefan at the right circle. Stefan then quickly dropped the puck back to a cycling Klassen for a snap shot past the shoulder of Tyler Brennan for a 1-0 lead.

Klassen then doubled the lead, and his goal total for the night, with another marker at 13:36 as he corralled Luke Schelter's rebound which had ricocheted off the post and tucked it home behind the unsuspecting Brennan. After scoring in game one, Klassen is the only Winterhawks skater with multiple goals in the 2022 playoffs, having notched three in three games.

Portland now looks for the first-round sweep in game four tomorrow at CN Centre in Prince George. Puck drop is set for 7:00 P.M.
