Oil Kings Statement on Cancellation of 2020 Playoffs and Memorial Cup
March 23, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
(Edmonton, AB) - Earlier today, after a meeting among the CHL Executive Council and respective regional Board of Governors, as well as consulting medical experts, the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) has made the decision to cancel the 2020 WHL Playoffs and 2020 CHL Memorial Cup presented by Kia.
While this decision to cancel the remainder of the season is a frustrating and difficult one for many of us to accept, preventative measures such as this for the health and safety of our players, fans, employees and our community needs to come first.
"Oilers Entertainment Group understands the challenging circumstances surrounding COVID-19 which led to the ultimate decision to cease play for the remainder of this season," said Edmonton Oil Kings Chairman, Bob Nicholson.
"We fully support the decision and we know it wasn't made lightly. We thank our fans, staff and players for their contribution to a great Oil Kings season and we will be back stronger than ever when hockey returns.
"In the meantime, we encourage everyone to continue to follow best practices as advised by medical professionals to maintain the health and safety of you and your loved ones and do your part to flatten the curve."
