Saskatoon Blades Respond to Cancellation of WHL Playoffs

Saskatoon, SK - As one of the oldest Clubs in the Western Hockey League, the Saskatoon Blades take great pride in putting our community and fanbase first. We deeply care about the health, safety, and well-being of our supporters, players, staff, and community, and understand there will be difficult decisions which come from the unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 pandemic. While it's disappointing and unfortunate, the Blades respect and support the WHL and CHL's decision to cancel the 2020 Playoffs and Memorial Cup.

"The only word I can think of to describe today's news is sad," stated general manager Colin Priestner. "We all sensed it was coming with each passing day showing us the scope of this pandemic, but it still hurts so badly to see it become official.

"I'm sad that our players and our coaches and managers who worked so hard all year, who were coming together as a team so strongly since January will never have the chance to play together as a group again. I'm sad for Scott, Riley and Nolan who won't have a chance to play junior hockey again and didn't get their chance to say goodbye. I'm sad that our fans who supported us night after night and believed in us won't get to see us playing in the playoffs."

The Blades will continue to work with medical professionals, along with representatives of the WHL and CHL in the coming weeks in hopes of developing a plan for the off- season. Our goal is to begin the 2020-21 regular season on time in September.

"I wish so badly we could play to give the people of Saskatoon something to inspire or entertain them but the reality is the health of our society is so much more important than any game," continued Priestner. "We fully support and agree with the CHL's decision to conclude the season. There is simply no way around it. The days ahead will be the toughest in the history of our team as we deal with the realities of the world around us. I can assure you we will not stop battling and working for this city until we get to play again in front of our fans next season. I believe that day will be the finest day in our franchises long history and until then I hope all of our players, staff, fans and partners everywhere are safe, healthy and battling through these unpredictable times with us every step of the way."
