Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings wrapped up their six-game homestand Sunday afternoon with a 6-2 loss to the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds at Rogers Place.
A back-and-forth first period between the Oil Kings and Thunderbirds saw the two teams combine for 28 shots on net and four goals as they arrived at the first intermission tied at two.
The Thunderbirds opened the scoring 2:14 into the game when Kazden Mathies notched his first career WHL goal by finishing off a backdoor feed from Samuel Charko for the game's icebreaker.
The Oil Kings got back to even just past the halfway mark of the period after captain Rhett Melnyk did a great job to keep a puck in along the right-wing boards of the Seattle zone before finding Roan Woodward open at the side of the Thunderbirds net where he would elevate a shot over the left-arm of Scott Ratzlaff for his first goal as an Oil King.
The T-Birds restored their lead just under six minutes later after Braeden Cootes pounded in a rebound in front of the Edmonton net on a Seattle power play.
With just over a second left in the first period, the Oil Kings once again levelled the score after Gavin Hodnett setup Rilen Kovacevic on a shorthanded odd-man rush for his sixth goal of the season.
The teams remained tied at two until just past the midway mark of the second period when Seattle would score twice in a span of 2:37 to take a 4-2 lead.
Sawyer Mynio staked the Thunderbirds to their third lead of the afternoon after he out a point shot top-shelf through half-a-dozen bodies in front of Edmonton netminder Kolby Hay.
Former Oil King Luca Hauf then gave the visitors their first breathing room of the afternoon after he capitalized on a rebound in front of the Edmonton net that was generated from a Caleb Potter point shot.
In the third period, the Thunderbirds locked the Oil Kings down and got goals from Antonio Martorana and the second of the night from Mathies to skate to a 6-2 win.
Hay made 30 saves in the Oil Kings crease, while Ratzlaff made 23 for the T-Birds. Edmonton went 0-for-3 on the power play, Seattle was 1-for-6.
