Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB.: The Edmonton Oil Kings are on the road for the next two games of the Exhibition Schedule. The team will play the Red Deer Rebels in back to back contests this weekend. Friday night, the Rebels will host the Oil Kings in Stettler. On Saturday, Edmonton is the host in Leduc, in the Battle in Oil Country, presented by Enmax.

The Oil Kings still have a lot of tough decisions to make when it comes to the final roster. The team is down to 31 players including 3 goalies, 12 defensemen and 16 forwards.

"The players we have left have made it this far because of how they compete," says Head Coach Steve Pleau. "We have a lot of character guys left in our dressing room. It is a testament to our GM, Bob Green, because he doesn't just draft players on talent alone."

The Oil Kings won all three of their games in their 3rd Annual Pre-season Invitational Tournament in St. Albert. Edmonton outscored their opponents 13 to 4 in those contests.

"I wouldn't read to much into the results from St. Albert." says the third year Head Coach. "We liked some of the things we did, but the other teams had to travel and their line ups were young."

A number of the Oil Kings veterans are off to NHL Training Camps this upcoming weekend. Brett Breitkreuz, Torrie Jung, Michael Burns and Adrian Van de Mosselaer will all skate in the Edmonton Oilers Rookie Camp. Tomas Vincour is off to the Dallas Stars Rookie Camp, and Brent Raedeke is heading to the Detroit Red Wings, possibly for their entire Training Camp. In all, six veterans will be gone, so the rest of the players can expect a lot of ice time this weekend.

The Oil Kings Home Opener, and first game of the Regular Season is Saturday, September 19th, at 7:00 pm, at Rexall Place.
