Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Brandon, MB - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped a 4-1 decision to the Brandon Wheat Kings in the penultimate game of their five-game road trip on Friday night.
In the first period, the Wheat Kings piled up the shots outshooting the Oil Kings 17-6 and were rewarded with a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
Charlie Elick provided the period's lone goal after the Wheat Kings were able to cleanly win an offensive zone faceoff back to the rookie defenceman and he snapped a shot through a maze of bodies in front of Edmonton netminder Kolby Hay and into the back of the net at the 12:15 mark.
In the second period, the Oil Kings would be unable to connect on a couple of power play chances despite a number of good looks at the Brandon net.
With just five minutes left in the middle stanza, the Wheat Kings increased their lead after Caleb Hadland was able to win a faceoff to himself and slip a backhand just inside the post for his first career WHL goal.
In the third period, the Oil Kings would draw to within a goal eight minutes in after Gavin Hodnett raced onto a loose puck in the left-circle of the Brandon zone and ripped a quick shot into the top corner over the glove hand of Carson Bjarnason for his 10th goal of the season, and second in as many games.
Hodnett's goal would be as close as the Oil Kings would get though as the Wheat Kings restored their two-goal lead with just under two-and-a-half minutes left in the game on a goal from Dawson Pasternak before Matthew Henry would put the game officially of reach with an empty-netter in the final seconds.
Hay finished the night earning second star honours with 38 saves on 41 Brandon shots, while Bjarnason made 21 stops for the Wheat Kings. Edmonton went 0-for-4 on the power play, Brandon was 0-for-2.
