Raiders Fall 4-0 to Broncos to Kick off Home and Home Set
February 10, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release
For the second straight game, the Prince Albert Raiders were shutout 4-0 by their opponent, as they were defeated by the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night on the road.
The Broncos scored the only goal of the first period, opening the scoring at the 10:40 mark. Sam McGinley circled behind the net and threw a pass in front, where it was picked up by Connor Hvidston. Firing a shot, Hvidston beat the traffic in front and scored his 13th goal of the season past a scrambling Tikhon Chaika. The goal gave Swift Current a 1-0 lead midway through the opening frame.
Swift Current also had the only two powerplay chances in the first period, but failed to score on either. However, they outshot the Raiders 11-5 in the opening 20 minutes, as they took their 1-0 lead into the second period.
In the middle frame, the Broncos added to their lead. With 11:56 to go, Brady Birnie caught Chaika out of position, scoring a wraparound goal to make it 2-0. Then just 44 seconds later, Birnie was behind the net again, but this time he set a goal up. He found Owen Pickering creeping into the low slot, and fed a pass to the Broncos captain. Pickering one timed a shot past Chaika to give Swift Current two quick goals to make it 3-0 midway through the second period.
Just one goal was scored in the third period, and it was scored by the Broncos. After failing to score on their first six powerplay chances of the game, Swift Current finally broke through on their seventh opportunity. Matthew Ward fired home a one timer from the slot to make it 4-0 with his 20th goal of the season. Those seven powerplay chances in the game were rivalled by just one powerplay all game for the Raiders, who were not on the refs side at all in the contest, with their only powerplay of the game coming midway through the second period.
4-0 would stand as the final, as Reid Dyck picked up his first career WHL shutout, while the Raiders were shutout by a 4-0 score for the second straight game.
The green and gold fall to 19-28-3-0 with the loss, and will look for a weekend split tomorrow night when the Broncos are in Prince Albert. Puck drop is 7pm.
