Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Swift Current, SK - The Edmonton Oil Kings kicked off their two-game mid-week road trip with a loss in Swift Current to the Broncos on Tuesday night.
A dead-even first period between the Oil Kings and Broncos saw the teams enter the first intermission tied 1-1 on the scoreboard and 11-11 on the shot clock.
The Broncos opened the scoring with a power play goal from Matthew Ward at the 9:55 mark of the period after he ripped in a one-timer from the right-circle on a cross-seam pass from Connor Hvidston.
It took just over three minutes for the Oil Kings to respond as Mason Finley collected his 12th goal of the season after he snapped home a shot from the slot on a setup from Rhett Melnyk who had intercepted a cross-ice pass between a pair of Swift Current defenders behind their net.
In the second period, the Oil Kings were able to snag the lead on another goal from Finley after he dove to his stomach to slide home a blind backhanded shot off a rebound from a Cole Miller one-timer on an Edmonton power play with 6:46 left in the middle stanza.
The lead, however, would be short-lived as the Broncos countered just 2:31 later after Sam McGinley was able to get a shot through a crowd of bodies in front of the Edmonton net to send the two Clubs to the second intermission tied at a pair of goals apiece.
In the third period, the Broncos would get a pair of goals from Caleb Wyrostok and Josh Davies in the opening four and a half minutes and would not look back on their way to a 5-2 victory capped by a late-period goal from Brady Birnie.
Logan Cunningham finished the night making 32 saves for the Oil Kings, while Reid Dyck turned in 27 for the Broncos. Edmonton was 1-for-6 on the power play, Swift Current was 1-for-4.
Next up, the Oil Kings head to Medicine Hat to tangle with the Tigers tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
The Edmonton Oil Kings next home game is their final home game of the 2022-23 season when they take on the Calgary Hitmen Saturday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m.
