Adam Evanoff was back between the pipes and also hitting the books this season.

The Moose Jaw Warriors alum suited up for his first season of U Sports hockey with the University of Regina Cougars and started work towards his degree in Sports Recreation Management.

"It's been great here at the U of R, I'm loving it," Evanoff said.

"It's a great program they offer here at the U of R, it's a lot of kinesiology and business classes, I'm hoping for a management role in hockey one day."

Evanoff played four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Warriors and Victoria Royals and is taking advantage of the WHL Scholarship Fund to attend the University of Regina.

"Luckily, I was able to play four years in the WHL, so I have all five years of school paid for," he said. "I'm so thankful that the Western Hockey League provides this education fund for us and hopefully I won't come out with any debt after I'm done my degree is going to be huge."

The Penticton, B.C. product said staying involved in hockey as part of his career after playing is the focus of his education.

"At first I was going to do a business degree, I didn't know there's such thing as a Sports Rec Management degree," Evanoff said. "I always imagined myself having a job in hockey, whether that's coaching or managing. It's a great chance for me to continue my passion for sorts and also learn about the business side."

After wrapping up his WHL career during the COVID-19 effected season in 2020-21, Evanoff spent a year at school at the University of Saskatchewan before making the move to Regina.

He said he's adjusted well to being out on his own.

"It's been great," Evanoff said. "I found the transition somewhat easy, just living away from home in junior, away from the parents and everything."

Evanoff said balancing the school and hockey schedule is very similar to what it's like during junior hockey.

"My first year [in Moose Jaw], I was 17 and was in grade 12, but I did online classes, so I'm doing lots of those still," he said. "We're mostly back in person, but they offer hybrid classes, so you can either watch a Zoom online to watch a lecture or go in person, so it's very similar.

"Doing your school work during the day and then going to practice in the afternoon, I'd say it's pretty similar."

On the ice, Evanoff put together a strong first season with the Cougars, finishing with a 7-10-2-1 record, a 3.74 goals against average and a 0.893 save percentage in 21 games.

He saw the third-most shots in the Canada West conference during the regular season.

Evanoff said it was an up and down season for the team, which is coached by fellow Warriors alum Todd Johnson.

"We were pretty streaky, we found our stride in the second half though," he said.

"It's been great playing under Todd Johnson, he speaks highly of Moose Jaw and it's funny, we've got a few Moose Jaw guys on the team, so we have that connection going."

Evanoff played three seasons with the Warriors, finishing in the top-10 all-time in franchise history in wins, goals against average and save percentage.

He said he looks back fondly on his time with the Warriors.

"It meant everything to me," he said. "Still to this day, it was the best time in my hockey career. I met so many great people through the staff, my teammates, my billets, it's just lifelong friends."

Evanoff is now focused on wrapping up his first year of school at the University of Regina and start preparing for season two with the Cougars.
