Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

[Edmonton, AB] - The Edmonton Oil Kings and Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Edmonton Branch are teaming up to raise awareness about the importance of mental health when the Oil Kings host the Brandon Wheat Kings on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 7:00 PM MT at Roger Place.

The awareness campaign is part of the ongoing commitment by the Oil Kings and CMHA Edmonton to implement Talk Today. Talk Today provides mental health support to players and raises awareness about mental health and suicide prevention throughout communities across the Western Hockey League.

A key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players about mental health and suicide prevention. Every team has received mental health training specific to suicide prevention. Each team is also now linked to a CHMA Mental Health Coach, who provides support and mental health resources to individuals in need.

"We are grateful to the Oil Kings and the Western Hockey League for hosting the Talk Today awareness game," said Advocacy and Wayfinding Coordinator with CMHA Edmonton, Melissa Halama. "Such events are vital in opening up the conversation around mental health, breaking down barriers and reducing stigma. Mental health is a conversation that can be had by all."

"The Oil Kings are proud to once again partner with CMHA Edmonton to help build awareness and conversation when it comes to mental health," said Oil Kings Director of Business Operations, Daniel Troiani.

"We encourage our players - and our fans - to keep their mental health a priority, and we believe the Talk Today initiative gives people ways to do just that. Whether it's helping yourself, or helping someone else, Talk Today can be an important staple in changing someone's day or life."

Tickets for the game are still available and start as low as $20.
