Isaiah DiLaura Shines in Broncos Loss to Oil Kings

SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (9-30-1-3) received a phenomenal goaltending performance from Isaiah DiLaura Wednesday night, but his 57 saves weren't enough in a 5-3 loss to the Edmonton Oil Kings (31-6-7-3).

After weathering a bit of an early storm, the Broncos got on the board first. Sam McGinley gained the Edmonton line on the right wing before sending a shot on net that snuck through the blocker arm of Beck Warm.

The Oil Kings ramped up the pressure looking for the tying goal, and had a power play for the final 1:54 of the first, but Isaiah DiLaura was strong in net as the first period ended with the shots 19-6 in favour of the Oil Kings.

Eric Houk pushed the Broncos lead to 2-0 early in the second as he jumped on a rebound from Sergei Alkhimov's shot 2:11 into the period.

Following the goal, the Oil Kings put on the full-court press, dominating play for nearly the remainder of the period. DiLaura had over 30 saves before Edmonton cut into the Broncos lead.

A shot from the slot bounced off a stick and up in the air before hitting the base of the post on DiLaura's glove side. Riley Sawchuk jammed at the puck and was able to push DiLaura and the puck into the net. After a short conference with the officials, they ruled it a goal and the Broncos lead was 2-1.

The Broncos received a power play late in the second and came close to restoring their two-goal lead. Jaxan Kaluski hit the crossbar off a rebound as the Broncos put six shots on Warm, but couldn't solve him.

The Oil Kings had a shorthanded chance on the power play and another rush shortly after it expired, but DiLaura held them at bay.

Off the next faceoff in the Broncos zone, Edmonton pulled even. Carter Souch shoveled the puck on net from in tight and snuck it under the blocker of DiLaura to tie the game with 1:19 left in the second.

The Oil Kings pulled ahead just 20 seconds into the third when Matthew Robertson's shot beat a screened DiLaura to make it 3-2.

Edmonton pushed it to 4-2 off a tip in front before the Broncos responded with Jaxan Kaluski jumping on a rebound to make it 4-3 with 8:16 to go.

That was as close as the Broncos would get as Scott Atkinson hit the empty net from centre ice to seal the 5-3 final. The Broncos are back in action Friday night against the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Announced attendance was 1,879.
