Sanford Mainers News Release

As the 2013 NECBL season continues to get underway, the Mainers look back at their rocky 0-3 start as something in the past. The Mainers' bats came alive tonight and exploded for fourteen runs on fifteen hits to top the Danbury Westerners 14-5. With that victory, the Mainers have won five of their last six games and improve to 5-4 on the year.

The Westerners started things early in the top half of the second against Mainers starter David D'Errico. Alex Tuccio led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a double off the bat of Johnny Caputo. Caputo then switched places with Jonathan Testani who doubled scoring both runners to put them up 2-0.

In the bottom half of the second, the Mainers answered with three runs of their own to take the lead 3-2. Phil Mosey led off with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Jake Thomas. After one out, Sam Balzano singled to short scoring Mosey. Westerners starter Brandon Bonilla loaded the bases behind him and then hit Anthony Papio to force in the tying run. During the next at bat, Zander Wiel struck out, but with the pitch being dropped and sent to the backstop, Balzano came into score the go ahead run.

During the next half inning, the Westerners reclaimed the lead, scoring twice. With runners at the corners and two outs, Caputo singled to center scoring Greg Pezzuto. Testani followed with a single of his own to score Tuccio.

It was all Mainers offense after that in the bottom of the third. The game was blown wide open when the Moose were able to put up eight runs on six hits. Mosey led the run parade when he led off with a double and later scored on a single by Mike Friel. Balzano walked and with two runners on Will Cooper extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double down the left field line scoring two.

The Mainers scored three more times on a single by Cole Martin, a triple by Mosey, and an error committed by Westerners short stop, Riley Palmer.

The score stayed at 11-4 for three innings until the Westerners grabbed one more in the seventh, but the Mainers weren't finished, scoring three more times in the bottom of the eighth on a couple of defensive mishaps by Danbury's fielders.

Sam McKay received the win for the Mainers in relief as D'Errico only lasted three innings, and Bonilla collected the loss for Danbury.

The Mainers will be off tomorrow night, but will return home on Friday to host the Ocean State Waves. James Bourque takes the ball for his second start of the season. Game time slated for 6:30p.m.
