Ocean State Waves News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. "" Mike Gerber collected three hits and scored two runs but the Newport gulls used a five-run third and a three-run eighth to pull away for a 9-2 victory over Ocean State on Wednesday night at Cardines Field.
The loss is the fifth-straight for the Waves (3-6), while the Gulls (5-3) captured their second-straight victory.
Held under wraps for the first two innings, the Gulls were finally able to break through in the third, plating five runs. Shea Donlin started the rally by beating out an infield single with one out, and Cody Jones followed with a single to left. Trace Tam Sing then hit what appeared to be an inning-ending double play ball to third but he was able to beat the relay to first to keep the inning alive. The hustle paid off as Ben Roberts followed with a double off the center field wall to make it 1-0. Back-to-back hit batters forced in the second Gulls run before a potential inning-ending ground ball to third resulted in three runs. Joel McKeithan hit a soft chopper to third that he beat out for a single but the throw got away, allowing a second run to score. A third run scored on the play as McKeithan was caught in a rundown between first and second.
The Gulls tacked on a sixth run in the fifth inning. Roberts led off with a single and scored on a double to left field by Timmy Robinson.
Ocean State had a chance to take a lead in the top of the third inning but stranded runners on the corners. Reed Gamache reached on an error to start the inning and then moved to third on a single to center from Christian Muscarello. Newport starter Brett Graves, however, got a fly ball to left to end the threat.
The Waves were finally able to scratch across a run in the sixth. Gerber ripped a single up the middle with two outs, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored as Caden Bailey flared a single into left field. Graves once again stopped the bleeding, getting a fly ball to left to end the frame.
Ocean State put together another rally in the eighth but a double play ball stunted the damage. Gerber doubled with one out and Chris King followed with an infield single to deep short that eventually scored Gerber as it was thrown away at first. Bailey followed that with a sharp single to right but Newport reliever Joe Iorio induced a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Jimmy Duff made his second start of the summer for the Waves and suffered his first loss of the season. He allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits over 3.2 innings. The bullpen combination of Oliver Powers, Austin French, Tom Bammann, John Tangherlini and Austin Hill combined to allow four runs over the final 4.1 innings. Powers allowed a run on three hits over 1.1 innings, French struck out two in a scoreless sixth and Bammann registered a scoreless seventh. Tangherlini and Hill combined to allow three runs in the eighth.
Offensively, Gerber had his second three-hit game of the year and scored both Waves runs. Bailey chipped in with two hits for Ocean State.
The Waves will continue their three-game road trip on Thursday when they travel to Keene, N.H., to face the SwampBats. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
