Modesto Nuts News Release
STOCKTON, CA (June 9th, 2013) -- Modesto capped off an impressive offensive weekend with a 10-3 victory over the Ports on Sunday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark.
With 10 runs on 12 hits, the Nuts (30-33) finished the four-game series with 35 runs and 49 hits as they earned a split with Stockton.
Modesto pulled away late from the Ports, scoring four runs in the seventh and adding three in the eighth to break a 4-4 tie. With the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, Jose Rivera scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by T.J. Walz. Ryan Casteel followed with a 2-run double and Will Swanner finished the inning with a sac-fly. In the eighth, Brian Humphries hit a towering 3-run homer that came close to finding the deep water channel behind the ballpark in right-field.
Reliever David Mota (0-1) took the loss after hitting Rivera and walking Trevor Story to open the seventh. Walz then gave up the seven runs, with two being charged to Mota.
Nuts starter Eddie Butler (2-1) turned in another strong outing for the win, lasting seven innings while limiting the Ports to only three runs on five hits.
Modesto took the early lead, as Swanner hit an opposite-field 2-run homer to get the scoring started against Ports starter Shaeffer Hall.
After retiring the first nine batters of the game, Butler ran into his only trouble in the fourth with some help from the offensive-friendly Banner Island Ballpark. Myrio Richard led off with a solo home run that went until the "Jackson Racheria Back Porch", which is the shortest part of the yard. After a single by Addison Russell, Max Muncy popped one up that just barely made it over the fence in the same area as Richard's for a 2-run homer.
Stockton held a 3-2 lead until Rivera led off with a single in the fifth, stole second, and scored on a 2-out single by Taylor Featherston.
The Nuts will now play their final three road games of the first half against first-place San Jose, starting on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Dan Winkler (8-2, 2.45) will take the hill for Modesto opposite LHP Kelvin Marte (2-2, 3.79) for the Giants.
