Offense Stays Cool Against Hawks

Sanford Mainers News Release

Sanford - It was another tough night at Goodall Park for the Mainers' bats on Tuesday night as they lost the Upper Valley by a final of 5-2, the second straight time they've lost to the Nighthawks by that very same score. The offense was able to put up eight hits but just weren't able to produce in the run column as their streak of two runs or less continues.

Just like they did on Saturday night in Hartford, Vermont, the Nighthawks struck first with a big three run inning in the top half of the 1st on four hits, including scoring two runs with two outs to take a 3-0 after one.

From that point on, however, Sanford's starter Ryan Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Rhode Island) settled down as he put up four straight scoreless innings while striking out a pair along the way.

Sanford got one back for Twitchell in the bottom half of the 4th as Shane Marshall (Webster, N.Y./Binghamton) ripped his second hit of the night into center field for the RBI single which scored Jonathan White (Lawrenceville, Ga./Presbyterian) who led the inning off with a single and chipped away at the Nighthawks' lead, now just 3-1.

Sean Fisher (Parsonsburg, Md./Maryland) showed why he is one of seven Northern Division All-Stars on this Mainers team as he came in a retired the first six hitters he faced to keep the game at 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 7th.

The Mainers inched ever closer as they got their second run of the game on a two-out RBI base hit for Carmine Pagano (McLeansville, N.C./UNC-Asheville) that brought around Josh Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn./SNHU) and pulled the Moose within a run at 3-2.

In a déjà vu in the cruelest of fashions, Upper Valley put up two insurance runs over the final two innings to put the game out of reach and got out of Goodall with the win, knotting the season series at two games apiece.

Sanford will travel to Holyoke tomorrow to take on the division-leading Valley Blue Sox as with just seven games to go, each one becomes more critical than the last. You can tune in for all the action live on the NECBL Broadcast Network and 102.3 FM "The Legends" back in Sanford as the Moose look to snap a four-game skid with a big time road victory.
