Newport Gulls News Release
New Bedford, Mass. - Newport improved to 19 - 18 on the summer with a 4-3 victory over the New Bedford Bay Sox (16 - 23) on Tuesday night. The Gulls are now tied with the Mystic Schooners (20 - 19) for the final playoff spot in the Southern Division with just seven games remaining in the regular season.
Bryant University's Tyler Mattison captured his second win of the season with a three run, six hit performance in 6.1 innings while fellow Bulldog Nate Wrighter picked up his league-leading ninth save of the summer.
Tim Tawa started the game with a leadoff walk and was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Jack Gethings. With Tawa on third-base, Kody Hoese dropped a single down the left field line to give Newport a quick 1-0 lead.
The Bay Sox would jump to a 2-1 advantage after scoring one run in both the third and fourth innings, but Dalton Reed refused to yield as he launched a three-run homer over the left-field fence in the top of the fifth. Reed, who was named the New England Collegiate Baseball League's Week Seven Player of the Week, now leads the Gulls with 11 home runs on the season. He will represent Newport in both the 2018 All-Star Game and the 2018 NECBL Home Run Derby this coming Sunday.
Clinging to a one-run lead, Newport's bullpen of Mike Kirian and Nate Wrighter combined for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to halt any Bay Sox comeback. The Gulls are now 2-3 head-to-head against New Bedford this season and will host the Bay Sox at Cardines Field on Friday night for the final meeting of the summer.
Newport has a quick turnaround as the Vermont Mountaineers (16 - 22) come to town on Wednesday night for a 6:35 p.m. showdown at Cardines Field.
