Frederick Keys News Release
Zebulon, NC - Carolina used four early runs and great pitching from four pitchers in a 4-1 win over the Keys on Memorial Day at Five County Stadium. The Keys were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and ended the road trip with a 5-2 record.
The Mudcats scored four runs in four innings against Keys starter Mitch Horacek. Joey Meneses was the main nemesis, as he brought home three.
In the first inning, Ryan Gebhardt and Reed Harper knocked back-to-back singles. After Joseph Odom flied out to center, Meneses doubled home Gebhardt for a 1-0 lead. Carolina left the bases loaded, as Horacek got a fly out and force out to end the inning.
Meneses attacked in the second inning again, this time with two outs. Joseph Daris doubled and Erison Mendez singled to place runners on the corners, but Horacek struck out Gebhardt and Harper. Joseph Odom walked on a full count, and Meneses singled in a pair to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage.
Horacek (2-5) surrendered another run in the fourth on the first professional home run for Gebhardt. He climbed the left field wall for his first long fly in 933 at-bats. Horacek tossed four innings, allowed eight hits, four runs, walked two, and struck out four.
The Keys would get their only run of the game in the fifth against Raymar Navarro (3-1), who made his first start of the year. Austin Wynns reached on an error by Gebhardt with two outs, and Josh Hart tucked a double into the left field corner for his seventh RBI of the year. Hart finished the Carolina series 7-for-13 with three doubles.
The Keys relief corps of Ivan Hernanez, Max Schuh, and Tanner Chleborad kept the Mudcats off the board the rest of the way, but the Keys left the tying run at the plate in the ninth. Steve Wilkerson singled against Sean McLaughlin (2) and Wynston Sawyer walked, but McLaughlin struck out Conor Bierfeldt, got Cam Kneeland to fly out, and Jomar Reyes rolled out to second.
The Keys will head home after an off-day on Tuesday to face off with Potomac starting Wednesday at 7 p.m. LHP Trevor Belicek (0-0, 0.00) takes to the mound for the Keys. Potomac's starter is TBA. The broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
