CarL1 Lynchburg Hillcats

Home Runs Bookend Extra-Inning Victory

May 30, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Greg Allen led off the game for the Hillcats by cranking a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for his second round-tripper of the season. Anthony Santander put a stamp on the Memorial Day festivities with a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Hillcats the 5-3 victory over the Salem Red Sox.

HOME RUNS PACE OFFENSES

After Greg Allen drilled his leadoff home run over the left-field fence, Lynchburg extended its lead to 2-0 in the first inning when Yu-Cheng Chang crushed an opposite-field triple just over an outstretched arm of Franklin Guzman to score Bobby Bradley. Bradley had singled on a hard ground ball to short one batter earlier.

Lynchburg only had one hit from the second inning until the ninth, but it was a solo home run. David Armendariz took Jalen Beeks deep with two outs in the fourth inning opposite field over the right field fence to make it 3-0.

Salem tied the game with a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homer by Mike Meyers in the seventh inning.

The Hillcats didn't answer until the 10th, but once they did, it was via the long ball again. Anthony Santander crushed a Jamie Callahan breaking ball over the right field fence with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, but it was deemed just foul by home plate umpire Chris Marco. Two pitches later, Santander made sure there were no doubts about the outcome of the game, parking a 1-2 pitch over the same fence for a two-run walk off homer.

LUGO HEADLINES SOLID PITCHING DAY

On the mound for the Hillcats, Luis Lugo faced the minimum through four innings. The lone hit given up in that time was a single to Joseph Monge, who was subsequently doubled up on a hit-and-run line drive by Danny Mars. Lugo struck out a season-high seven batters and tied a season-high with six innings pitched.

Lugo only surrendered one run in his fix six frames. Things unraveled for the southpaw in the seventh as he faced four batters and failed to retire any of them, surrendering three hits including a two-run home run from Meyers, and a walk.

David Speer came on to stop the bleeding, inheriting two runners with nobody out in a tied game but escaped unscathed. Speer went three shutout innings to keep the game deadlocked until the 10th. Trevor Frank (1-0) pitched a scoreless 10th to earn the win.
