Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Trey Martin reached base four times and Trevor Clifton struck out six over six solid innings to lead the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a 4-2 over the Wilmington Blue Rocks Monday at TicketReturn.com Field.
Martin was involved in two of the four run-scoring innings for the Pelicans (27-23) and has now recorded eight hits in his last 14 at-bats.
Clifton (3-3), meanwhile, struck out six over six innings without walking a batter. The right-hander put up five straight zeroes to finish off his outing.
However, to begin the game, the Blue Rocks (17-32) greeted Clifton with two straight hits. Cody Jones dragged a bunt single before Humberto Arteaga swatted a two-run homer to get the Rocks out in front.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Pelicans shortstop Gleyber Torres took Blue Rocks starter Corey Ray (1-1) deep down the right field line to make the score 2-1. The homer was Torres' sixth on the season.
In a 2-1 game in the bottom of the fourth, Jason Vosler smoked a one-out double to the right-center field gap. Three batters later, Martin singled up the middle to tie the game at two.
An inning later, Ray retired the first two batters before issuing a walk to Ian Happ. After Happ stole second, Yasiel Balaguert delivered a run-scoring single to left to put the Pelicans on top 3-2.
Still up 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Martin drew a walk and advanced to third on a Shawon Dunston single. The next batter was Rashad Crawford, who laid down a successful squeeze bunt to plate Martin and give Myrtle Beach a 4-2 lead.
Jordan Minch, Dillon Maples and Ryan McNeil each worked scoreless innings of relief to hold the lead for Myrtle Beach. McNeil earned his second save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
The Pelicans will enjoy an off day Tuesday before traveling to Salem to start a four-game series with the Red Sox at 11:05 a.m. on Wednesday. RHP Erick Leal (6-2, 3.71) will get the start in the first game for Myrtle Beach. Coverage will begin at 10:50 a.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com and the TuneIn App.
