Daytona Tortugas News Release
Palm Beach, FL - After winning two in a row against the Palm Beach Cardinals (36-40, 4-2) with just enough offense, the bats went quiet for the Daytona Tortugas (39-36, 2-3) against some excellent Cardinal pitching on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Through eight innings, Daytona was held to just two infield singles and had four total baserunners. They finished the game with four hits. Meanwhile, Palm Beach didn't wait long to get on the board. They plated three runs in the third and another in the fourth on the way to the 5-1 victory and supplied plenty of run support for their winning pitcher, Rob Kaminsky.
LHP Seth Varner (L, 0-1) made his Tortugas debut as the starting pitcher and came into the night's game with impressive numbers in 14 starts with the Dayton Dragons. Varner had walked just five batters in 78 innings with Dayton but struggled a bit with the Palm Beach lineup. In the bottom of the third, the number nine hitter Blake Drake led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. The inning continued with a single from Casey Turgeon who moved to second on a wild pitch and then third on a base hit from Robelys Reyes. Brett Wiley's sacrifice fly scored Turgeon and a single from Collin Radack plated Reyes. The Cardinals added a run in the fourth as well off of Varner as Reyes drove in Carson Kelly with an RBI double. With RHP Scott Brattvet on the mound for Daytona in the eighth, David Washington tripled and came home on an RBI groundout for the Palm Beach's fifth run.
The Tortugas had trouble getting on base all night against the dominating pitching of Kaminsky and found their first base hits to the outfield and only run of the game in the top of the ninth. 2B Carlton Daal doubled and CF Junior Arias singled him home to end the Cardinals' shutout bid. The run was charged to Kevin Herget. Prior to that inning, SS Alex Blandino and LF Brian O'Grady recorded the only two hits for Daytona. Kaminsky went the first seven innings and gave up just two hits. He also struck out four and walked two to earn his sixth win of the year.
With the loss, the Tortugas split the four game series with the Cardinals but still hold a 5-3 record over Palm Beach this season. The Tortugas now head back to Daytona Beach for their first home game since June 14th as they'll open a homestand against the Lakeland Flying Tigers. First pitch for tomorrow night's opener is set for 7:05 P.M. from Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Fans can listen to the action on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:50 P.M.
