St. Lucie Mets News Release
TAMPA, Fla. (June 30, 2015) - The Tampa Yankees erased a 2-0 deficit and came back to clip the St. Lucie Mets 3-2 on Tuesday night at Steinbrenner Field.
The Mets, who entered the day with a chance to win the series, settled for a 2-2 split. The Mets are now 38-38 overall and 3-3 in the FSL's second half.
With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Mike Ford hit a double on a 2-0 pitch from Kelly Secrest. Ford advanced to third base on a fly ball from Miguel Andujar and scored on a wild pitch by Secrest to break the tie.
Alex Smith retired the Mets in order in the ninth to get the win.
The Mets took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning. Phil Evans and Lednier Ricardo started the frame with two singles and Yeixon Ruiz put the Mets up 1-0 on an RBI hit to center.
The Mets later loaded the bases with one out but all they could muster against Rookie Davis was an RBI sac fly by Jairo Perez to take a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees immediately tied the game 2-2 in the bottom half of the sixth. Rob Whalen got ahead of the leadoff batter Abiatal Avelino 1-2, but he threw three straight balls to walk Avelino. Avelino stole second base and moved to third on a bunt hit by Tyler Wade. Avelino then scored on a passed ball to make it 2-1.
Dante Bichette, Jr. followed with the game's only extra base hit, a double, that plated Wade to tie it 2-2. Whalen would load the bases with two outs but get out of further trouble by getting Kyle Higashioka to fly out to center.
The Mets offense could only put together five singles. In the four-game series they scored seven runs.
Whalen went six innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He walked four and struck out five.
Davis went seven innings for the Yankees and scattered five hits and two runs while striking out six.
The Mets return home to Tradition Field on Wednesday to start a three-game series with the Jupiter Hammerheads. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.
