Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA - The Tampa Yankees (2-3, 36-39) wrapped up the season-series with the St. Lucie Mets (3-3, 38-38) by taking a 3-2 win in the finale on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The T-Yanks split the four-game set and won the season-series against St. Lucie, 5-3.
Rookie Davis became the fourth consecutive Tampa starter to deal a quality start. The right-hander pitched seven innings for the first time this season, allowing two runs on five hits. Davis walked one batter (intentionally) and struck out six in a no-decision.
St. Lucie grabbed the first lead with two runs in the sixth. Three straight singles by Phillip Evans, Lednier Ricardo and Yeixon Ruiz plated the first run of the game. Following a sacrifice bunt by Jeff McNeil, Davis intentionally walked Dominic Smith. A sacrifice fly by Jairo Prez scored Ricardo, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees quickly responded against RHP Rob Whalen in the home half. Abiatal Avelino led off with a walk and stole second. Tyler Wade laid down a bunt single towards first, placing runners on the corners. Wade then stole second and Avelino scored on a passed ball by the catcher Ricardo. A groundout by Fowler pushed Wade to third and Dante Bichette Jr. tied the game with an RBI double to center.
Whalen allowed two runs on four hits in six innings, walking four while striking out five in a no-decision for St. Lucie.
Tampa scored the go-ahead run off LHP Kelly Secrest (5-2) in the eighth. Mike Ford led off and lined a double down the right field line. Ford tagged up to third on a deep fly out to right by Miguel Andujar. Two pitches later, Ericson Leonora swung and missed at a wild pitch that allowed Ford to score.
RHP Alex Smith (1-0) worked around a walk in the eighth to pitch two scoreless relief innings, earning his first win of the season with Tampa.
Bichette (2-for-4, 2B) picked up his seventh RBI of the season since joining the T-Yanks on June 5th. Fowler (0-for-3) reached on a fielder's choice in the first and has reached base safely in all eight games played with Tampa. Wade (1-for-2, BB, HBP) reached three times and added his 28th stolen base of the year.
Up next, the Yankees travel to Clearwater on Wednesday to begin a three-game series with the Threshers. LHP Jordan Montgomery (1-2, 3.04 ERA) will get the nod for Tampa and RHP Victor Arano (1-7, 5.25 ERA) is lined up to pitch for Clearwater. First pitch set for 7:00 p.m. at Bright House Field.
