Offense Sputters Again in Loss to Schaumburg

Florence Y'alls News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL - Yasel Santana was strong yet again on the mound for the Florence Y'alls, but the bats could not find enough offense to support the ace while the Schaumburg Boomers scored just enough to beat the Y'alls 2-1 Sunday night at Wintrust Field.

The loss is the sixth in a row on this road trip for Florence and the fifth one-run loss over that span. Each game against the Boomers this series has been decided by a single run. Schaumburg, meanwhile, has won six games in a row, five of which have been one-run wins. The Boomers are 7-1 over their past eight games.

Santana takes another tough-luck loss tonight, just days after he allowed just two runs in seven innings with seven strikeouts against Washington in the losing effort. Over his past 19 1/3 innings, the righty has allowed only six runs and has struck out 18 batters.

Florence scored the game's opening run in the third inning on an Axel Johnson RBI single. Johnson would finish with two hits and a walk, and the RBI was his seventh in six games on this road stretch. Harrison DiNicola is up to an eight-game hitting streak with a 1-4 night, and Brennan Price also had two hits for the Y'alls.

Schaumburg tied the game in the fourth inning on a Jordan Wiley single through the left side. The Boomers loaded the bases in that inning, but Santana settled down to get out of the threat with minimal damage. Two innings later, Santana departed with runners on the corners, and Karl Craigie allowed the inherited runner at third to score thanks to a Nick Oddo sacrifice fly RBI.

The two runs proved to be enough for the Boomers tonight, despite being out-hit by Florence and committing three errors defensively. The Y'alls did themselves no favors by leaving nine runners on base.

Schaumburg got a four inning start from Jumpei Akanuma in his first appearance since May 29, followed by four combined scoreless innings from Kristian Scott and Juan Pichardo. Jake Joyce faced the minimum and struck out two in the ninth inning to earn his second save of the series, locking down Friday's game also by a 2-1 score.

The Y'alls look to salvage the series and the road trip with at least one win tomorrow, Monday, July 4, at 6:00 PM CDT. It is the final game of seven in a row on the road before welcoming Lake Erie for three at home. Jonaiker Villalobos will start for Florence, and Blake Stelzer gets the ball for Schaumburg in the series finale.
