July 3, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies lost their third straight game overall and their seventh straight to the Evansville Otters on Sunday night by a final score of 6-2 in front of a season-best crowd of 6,985 at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
After a scoreless first two innings, Evansville got on the board on a pair of solo home runs from Anthony Torreullas and Elijah MacNamee at 2-0 in the top of the third inning. Gateway then got the tying run to the plate in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but could not score against Justin Watland (3-3), hitting into double plays to end the latter two innings.
The Otters then expanded the lead with two runs in the sixth on another home run by MacNamee and a two-out RBI single by J.R. Davis. Andy Armstrong would hit yet another solo home run off Carson LaRue (1-1) in the seventh inning to make it 5-0, and Evansville then completed their scoring in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Torreullas.
Trevor Achenbach would smack his league-leading 15th home run of the season, a solo shot, in the bottom of the seventh to get the Grizzlies on the board, and Isaac Benard smashed his tenth home run of the year (also a solo shot) in the ninth, but it was all that Gateway could muster in the game in dropping to 1-8 against Evansville in 2022.
Gateway will look to avoid being swept at home on Monday, July 4, when they play the Otters again at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. CT.
