Four Long Balls Propel ValleyCats to Sweep of Greys

TROY, NY - Sunday FunDay at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium as the Tri-City ValleyCats wrapped up their weekend series against the Empire State Greys.

Olbis Parra would get the ball for the ValleyCats, who were searching for their first sweep of the 2022 campaign. The right hander would retire the first two Greys he faced in the top of the first, and would induce a fly out from Trey Woosley to end the inning following a Jordan Holloman-Scott single, stranding a runner on base.

Greys starter Luis Pacheco would allow just two base runners during his first two innings of work. The right hander would walk Jesus Lujano with two outs in the first, and would surrender a lead off single to Brad Zunica in the second frame, both runners would be stranded on base. Empire State would strike first with a towering two-run shot off the bat of left fielder Jordan Holloman-Scott, Robbie Carling who walked in the at-bat before would come around to score on the long ball.

Jonah Girand would send a Luis Pacheco fastball into the ValleyCats bullpen, a solo home run that cut the Greys lead to 2-1. Following a 1-2-3 inning from Parra in the top of the fourth inning, the ValleyCats bats were back for more. Denis Phipps would lead off the inning with his 11th home run of the season, a solo home run over the right field fence. Third baseman Juan SIlverio would reach second on a double. Right fielder Carson McCusker would bring Silverio home with an opposite field single, giving the 'Cats a 4-2 lead.

Both offenses went quietly in the fifth inning, both Pacheco and Parra allowing just one base runner each in the inning.

Brad Zunica would lead off the bottom of the sixth inning against reliever Conor Maguire. The right handed reliever would plunk Zunica with an errant breaking ball. Maguire would get both Silverio and Joe Campagna to fly out, bringing Carson McCusker to the plate. The right fielder launched a fly ball into left field that Holloman-Scott couldn't handle, putting runners on the corners for Girand. The ValleyCats catcher sent a hanging curveball from Maguire deep over the left field fence, giving the 'Cats a four run cushion.

The seventh and final run of the game for Tri-City would come in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run from left fielder Brantley Bell.

The Greys would get one back on an RBI single with two outs in the top of the eighth from Trey Woosley off of Jake Dexter. That would be all Empire State could muster however, as Brac Warren and Trey Cochran-Gill would shut down the Greys offence for the final 1.1 innings.
