ABERDEEN, MD - The IronBirds defeated the ValleyCats on Tuesday night in Aberdeen by a final score of 7-1. J.C. Escarra led the way for Birds, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. ValleyCats starting pitcher Felipe Tejada was tagged with the loss, allowing four earned runs across the first three innings.
Aberdeen scored twice in the first on a double by Willy Yahn, twice in the third on a double by Escarra, and tacked on three more in the sixth on two RBI singles and a ground out.
Luis Encarnacion drove home the lone ValleyCats run of the ballgame on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, after Jeremy Pena and Seth Beer delivered back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Beer was the only 'Cat with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 on the night.
With the loss, the ValleyCats fall to 2-3 on the young season, and will face off in the rubber match against the IronBirds on Wednesday night.
Taking the mound for the 'Cats will be RHP Chad Donato (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who earned the ValleyCats opening night victory in Troy on June 15. He'll be opposed by IronBirds lefty Willie Rios (0-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch is 7:05pm at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen.
