Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
(State College, PA) - It took seven innings on Tuesday night for the Scrappers bats to wake up, but when they did they kept the Scrappers perfect to start the season. A seven run seventh inning was more than enough as the Scrappers topped the State College Spikes 7-4. With the win the Scrappers matched the 2009 team for the best start in franchise history.
State College would strike first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out and runners at first and second, Joe Gomez doubled to right to drive home both runs to put the Spikes up 2-0.
The Scrappers would have opportunities during the first six innings but could not find a way to get on the scoreboard.
In the top of the seventh inning, Mahoning Valley would break through when they sent 12 batters to the plate and score seven runs. Tre Gantt delivered the game tying runs with a double to score Elvis Perez and Jason Rodriguez. Two batters later Tyler Freeman would deliver his own two run double to put the Scrappers on top. A wild pitch would bring in the fifth run of the inning. Then with two outs Perez, who started the inning with a single, singled again to drive in the final two runs of the inning.
State College added single runs in the eighth and ninth before Luis Valdez slammed the door shut to finish off the game.
Zach Draper started and took a no decision in four innings of work. Draper allowed two earned runs on eight hits. He struck out six without walking a batter. Luis Araujo (1-0) earned the win in two innings of relief work. Araujo allowed just one hit and struck out two. Valdez (1) got the save in three innings of relief. Valdez allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits. He walked three and struck out one.
The Scrappers (5-0) look for the three game sweep on Wednesday night in State College. First pitch is set for 7:05. Juan Mota will get the start for the Scrappers. The Scrappers return home on Thursday, June 21st to face the Auburn Doubledays.
