Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - Despite a delay of over two-and-a-half hours and an abbreviation of a scheduled doubleheader to a single game due to rain, the Tri-City ValleyCats (25-27, 9-9) came out firing on all cylinders to begin a four-game midweek series against the New York Boulders (24-28, 8-7) at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The 'Cats reached double-digit scoring for the fifth time this season with a 12-1 victory in front of a crowd of 2,864.

Having adjusted the starting lineup after dropping three of five games in a weekend set against divisional foe Equipe Quebec, the 'Cats immediately got on the board with an RBI single from Willy Garcia to send in Oscar Campos, who led off with his team-leading 13th double of the season. Following the beginning of a gem on the mound from Right-hander Parker Kelly, the 'Cats took off with a five run frame in the second, highlighted by a three-run smash from Denis Phipps for his eighth home run of the year.

Four more runs would score for the 'Cats in the fourth, with Carson Maxwell taking a three run shot up the berm in left field to take the club lead in long balls. Maxwell became just the second 'Cat this year (Phips) to record a multi-homer and five-RBI game, lacing his second big-fly of the contest in the form of a two-run homer in the sixth.

With the offense holding a 13-3 hits advantage, Kelly (5-4) led a solid defensive effort with five quality innings of one-hit ball, allowing the only New York run of the night off an RBI groundout in the fifth while striking out four and walking three. Left-hander Ryan Munoz (1-3) took the loss for the boulders, allowing 10 runs (five earned) on as many hits while striking out five and walking a pair.

Tri-City will look to build on momentum from the series-opening win with a doubleheader on Wednesday, July 28 to make for Tuesday's poor weather showing. Gates will open at 4:00 PM, with action in game one beginning at 4:30 on Office Night, with postgame fireworks presented by Price Chopper and Market 32. Click Here for tickets.
