Offense erupts in Trenton's 9-5 win over Erie

(Erie, PA)- Thunder RHP George Kontos struck out a season-high 11 and picked up his first Double-A win as the Thunder defeated Erie 9-5 on Monday Night at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA. Trenton matched its longest winning streak of the season with its fourth consecutive win.

Kontos (1-3) matched his career-high in strikeouts in only 5 IP of work. He gave up 5 H and 3 ER and only walked 1. He retired the last 8 batters he faced. Down 1-0, Trenton (20-12) took the lead in the 2nd inning on an RBI single by C Joe Muich and an RBI groundout by SS Ramiro Pena. The Thunder stretched its lead to 4-1 in the 3rd inning on two-run home run by 1B Cody Ehlers off of Erie starting pitcher Jon Connolly (0-1). Connolly went 6 IP and gave up 13 H and 6 R (5 earned). Erie (15-15) trimmed the Thunder lead to 4-3 with a couple runs in the in the bottom of the 3rd inning, but Thunder 2B Kevin Russo responded in the 4th inning with a solo home run to make it 5-3.

CF Austin Jackson extended the lead to 6-3 with an RBI single in the 6th inning. The hit was one of three on the night for Jackson. However, the Sea Wolves refused to quit. Erie notched a run in the 7th on a two-out infield single by RF Deik Scram, and then sliced Trenton's lead to 6-5 in the 8th inning by plating a run on an error on Thunder 3B Chris Malec.

Trenton though would put the game away with three insurance runs in the 9th inning. DH Edwar Gonzalez drove home a run with an RBI ground out, and RF Jose Tabata lifted a sacrifice fly to score another run. Malec would then redeem himself with a an RBI double to restore a four-run cushion. RHP Eric Wordekemper closed out the ballgame for Trenton to pick up his fifth save in as many chances. The Thunder offense pounded out a season-high 17 hits and the Trenton pitching staff struck out a season-high 17 batters.

Trenton and Erie will play the second game of the four-game series on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Dan McCutchen (3-2, 2.33) starts for Trenton against Erie RHP Andrew Kown (2-2, 7.00).
