Connecticut Defenders News Release

HARRISBURG, PA- After scoring a slew of runs in Binghamton, the Defenders' bats fell silent on Monday as they lost the first game of the series to the Senators, 5-2.

The Senators jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning in an ugly way. Justin Maxwell got on first on an error, stole second and advanced two bases to score on a passed ball and a wild pitch as Harrisburg set an interesting precedent for the series.

The Sens added two more in the third on two triples and a single as Harrisburg enjoyed a 3-0 advantage.

Connecticut finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth as Olmo Rosario led off the inning with a double. Eddy Martinez-Esteve singled him over to third and Adam Witter sent Rosario to the plate on a sac fly to center to trim the lead to 3-1.

Like clockwork, the Senators responded in the home half of the sixth. Devin Ivany delivered a two-run shot to extend the Harrisburg advantage to 5-1.

The Defs would get back on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh as Kyle Haines led off with a single. Brad Boyer knocked a base hit of his own and Olmo Rosario slapped his third base hit of the ballgame to score Haines. After six and a half, the Senators were nursing a 5-2 lead.

The same day Ben Copeland was named the Bank of America Player of the Week, the outfielder went 0-for-3 at the plate. Copeland scored 8 runs in two days and was 7 for his last 11 at the plate before Monday evening's contest.

Paul Oseguera was handed his first loss of the season, as newly promoted starter in Cory Van Allen earned his first win. Van Allen tripled and drew a walk at the plate in his Double-A debut.

Connecticut will come back to the Dodd on Friday, May 9th at 6:30pm. Tickets are still available for the series against the Binghamton Mets at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
