Sea Dogs late charge falls short, lose 5-4 to New Hampshire

(Portland, ME) - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (10-19) used a 4-run sixth inning to beat the Portland Sea Dogs 5-4 on Monday night at Hadlock Field.
Portland (17-13) has lost seven straight games and dropped into third place for the first time this season.
Justin Masterson (1-2) suffered his second straight loss, working 5 and 1/3 innings on four hits, four runs and six strikeouts. The righty tossed five scoreless frames on one hit until New Hampshire batted around in the sixth inning against Masterson, Daniel Haigwood and Kyle Jackson.
Julio Pinto (1-0) earned the win for New Hampshire in his Double-A debut, working 1+ innings on two hits and one run. Jamie Vermilyea earned a hold despite allowing two runs in the ninth inning. Sean Stidfole recorded his third save of the year.
The Sea Dogs trailed 5-2 entering the bottom of the 9th inning and began the frame with back-to-back walks from Andrew Pinckney and Ryan Khoury. Aaron Bates delivered a pinch-hit RBI single, chasing Vermilyea out of the game. Stidfole struck out Bubba Bell, walked Iggy Suarez and yielded a sacrifice fly to Jeff Corsaletti. Stidfole notched the save on Mark Wagner's pop out to second base.
Aaron Mathews gave New Hampshire their first runs of the series with a 2-run triple off Masterson in the sixth inning - giving the 'Cats a 2-1 lead. David Smith added an RBI single and Anthony Hatch had a bases loaded walk. Hatch singled home New Hampshire's fifth run in the eighth inning off Mike James.
John Otness accounted for Portland's first two runs on sacrifice flies.
New Hampshire starter Brett Cecil, who was drafted 38th overall by Toronto in 2007, worked four and 2/3 innings on three hits and one run.
Zach Daeges and Wagner each had two hits for the Sea Dogs, who fall to 1-3 against New Hampshire this season.
The two teams play game two of the series on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. RHP Matt Goodson (1-1, 4.00) will face LHP A.J. Wideman (1-3, 4.71).
Notes...New Hampshire's three road wins are all at Hadlock Field...Zach Daeges has reached base safely in 9 of 12 plate appearances since returning from the disabled list...Portland is 4-4 in their last eight home games.
