New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Both New Britain and Bowie entered Monday night's game riding six-game winning streaks, so something had to give for one of the teams. Fortunately for the Rock Cats, Erik Lis delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to give the âCats a 5-4 win.
In the eighth, Matt Moses reached base with a walk and David Winfree was hit by a pitch. That set the stage for Lis' double to right field that scored Moses and put the Rock Cats ahead for good.
Ben Julianel closed out the game with a perfect ninth, including two strikeouts, to pick up his fifth save.
Luke Hughes (2-for-3) continued to light up Eastern League pitching with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first. Bowie' Kyle Schmidt threw the ball away on an attempt to pick-off Hughes at first and allowed Hughes to move all the way to third. Brock Peterson then delivered a single to left field to knock in Hughes and put the Rock Cats on the board, 1-0.
In the second inning, Ryan Finan reached base on a leadoff walk and Ben Davis doubled to put runners on the corners. Mike Rodriguez then lined a sharp hit at pitcher Yohan Pino. The ball deflected off Pino's leg and into short left field. Plouffe fielded the ball, but Finan and Davis both scored on the play to give Bowie a 2-1 lead. Jonathon Tucker added a solo homer for the Bay Sox in the fifth inning.
Peterson added an RBI double in the sixth. Matt Moses then crushed a two-run shot over the right field wall to give the Rock Cats the lead, 4-3. The lead didn't last long, as Blake Davis hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
Pino tossed six solid innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out three. Armando Gabino (2-1, 1.04) fired 1 1/3 perfect innings in relief to pick up the win.
For the Bay Sox, Schmidt lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (2 ER) on five hits, in his Double-A debut. He struck out five. Jason Burch (0-1, 6.00) suffered the loss.
