Tuesday night the Oaks welcomed the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to Recreation Park. It would was the first meeting between the two teams in 2005. The Oaks after a day off on Monday split the previous series with the Modesto Nuts. The Quakes were rocked by Lake Elsinore, who not only swept the Quakes in a four game series but also handed them their fifth straight loss. The Oaks would send out right-hander Jeremy Flanagan vs. former Australian Olympic Silver Medallist Richard Thompson.
For the third game in a row the Oaks would jump out to a lead in the first inning when they scored a run on an errant throw by starter Richard Thompson to first with Elliot Johnson on third, as the Oaks took a 1-0 lead. They would make it 2-0 when Johnson got it started again leading off with a single. He then stole his league leading 18th base, was moved over to third on a groundout, and the newest Oak Wes Bankston in his first game singled in the second run. Last season Bankston was name the Charleston Player of the Year, hitting .289 with 23 homers and 101 RBI in an unfriendly hitters park.
In the fifth the Quakes made it 2-1 when Jason Sugden drove in Matt Pali but that would be as close as they got. The Oaks added two more in the sixth when Wes Bankston once again single home a run, and John Paul Davis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 4-1. Jeremy Flanagan's night was done after the seventh, and in only his second start of the season after beginning the year in the bullpen he was fantastic. Flanagan threw seven innings, allowing just four hits, one earned run, while walking three, and striking out five. The Quakes would get a run off Oaks closer Tony Peguero in the ninth, but he still picked up his fourth save of the year as the Oaks won by a final score of 4-2.
The Oaks and Quakes go at it again in game two of this three game series on Wednesday night. Visalia will send lefty Joe Little to the mound who will be opposed by right-hander Michel Simard. Game two gets under way at 6:35 PM, the Radisson pre-game show begins at 6:15, you can hear all the action on KJUG AM 1270 or log onto the Web at www.kjug.com.
