Modesto Nuts News Release

BAKERSFIELD – Eric Dean, playing in his second game at first base, hit his second home run in as many days, a two-run shot to right field in the seventh inning off Blaze reliever Marcos Herrera, to lead the Modesto Nuts to a 6-1 win over Bakersfield at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Dean's home run, his third of the season, was part of a three-run inning with Ian Stewart also driving in a run with one of his two doubles of the night. The Nuts scorched Herrera for five runs in his one and one-third innings after Blaze starter Ryan Wing no-hit Modesto for the first five innings of the game. Wing, recovering from shoulder surgery, walked four batters in the first two innings but settled down to retire the last ten batters he faced. Modesto added their final run on a bases loaded walk to Matt Macri in the eighth inning.

Tomas Santiago pitched six innings for his first victory of the season, allowing one run on five hits. Eudy Morel threw two shutout innings and Chris Steinborn pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the win. Morel's effort was saved by Seth Smith who made a great leaping catch in right field, taking an RBI hit away from Anthony Webster in the eighth inning. The Nuts defense turned three double plays on the night.

The series continues Wednesday night as Modesto sends Steven Register to the mound against the Blaze' Edison Volquez. Game time at Sam Lynn Ballpark in 7:30 p.m.
