San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants rapped out 17 hits on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton en route to a 10-2 victory over the Ports. Clay Timpner knocked out three doubles while Nate Schierholtz finished with four RBI to lead the San Jose offense. Meanwhile, Garrett Broshuis notched his team-leading fourth victory of the season with six quality innings of work on the mound. With the win, the Giants are now 2 _ games ahead of the second-place Ports in the North Division.
San Jose wasted little time against Stockton starting pitcher Danielin Acevedo plating three runs in the top of the first inning before an out was recorded. Timpner opened the game with a double to center field. After Kevin Frandsen's single moved Timpner to third, Schierholtz stepped to the plate and doubled home both runners for a 2-0 Giants lead. Up next was Eddy Martinez-Esteve and San Jose's leading hitter promptly followed with a double of his own to make it a 3-0 contest.
The Ports scored single runs against Broshuis in the second and fourth frames to cut the Giants advantage down to 3-2. But San Jose came right back with two scores of their own in the top of the fifth to push their lead back up to three runs. Both tallies came home with two outs as with Timpner on second base, Schierholtz grounded a single into right field for a 4-2 Giants lead. Then two batters later, Angel Chavez reached on an error by Stockton right fielder Danny Putnam to allow Schierholtz to score with the fifth run of the game for San Jose.
The Giants took command of the ballgame with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. With runners on first and second and one out, Chavez smoked a double into left field plating two to make it a 7-2 San Jose lead. Chavez would later score on catcher Eliezer Alfonzo's single to left.
The offensive onslaught continued in the eighth as the Giants produced two more runs. John Bowker got the rally started with a triple into left field. After Bowker scored on a balk, Timpner restarted the rally with his third double of the night. He would score on a Schierholtz two-bagger as the Giants reached double figures in runs scored.
Broshuis was solid during his six-inning stint on the mound. The right-hander allowed just two runs on four hits with a pair of walks and seven strike outs. Jeff Petersen, Jon Coutlangus, and Nathan Pendley each tossed a scoreless frame out of the bullpen to preserve the victory.
Timpner extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his 3-for-6, 3 2B performance at the plate. Timpner is batting a sizzling .408 (20-for-49) during the streak. In addition, Schierholtz (3-for-5, 2 2B, 4 RBI) and Martinez-Esteve (3-for-5, 2B, RBI) both came through with huge offensive outputs. Frandsen (2-for-4), Bowker (2-for-5, 3B), and Jennings (2-for-5) also had multi-hit games.
San Jose has now won nine out of their last 11. They've also taken 16 of their last 21 games to move to 19-12 on the season - the best record in the California League.
