Oakland Raised Hip Hop Superstar G-Eazy Joins Oakland Roots Ownership Group

September 20, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) - Oakland Roots News Release

Oakland, CA - Oakland Roots and Oakland Soul announced that entrepreneur, musician, and proud Oakland native Gerald Earl Gillum, better known as G-Eazy, is the newest member of the ownership group.

"There are not many things or places that have helped define me and my career more than the city that raised me," said the new Co-owner, G-Eazy. "What Oakland Roots and Soul are doing for the people of The Town and the community is truly one of a kind and something when asked to be a part of I had to jump in right away."

G-Eazy has deep roots in Oakland that exemplify the creativity, originality, and uniqueness that define what The Town is all about. From his childhood in Oakland to representing the city on a global scale, G-Eazy has taken Oakland to the World. He has used his far-reaching platform to launch The Endless Summer Fund - a non-profit dedicated to helping Bay Area under-served youth reach their full potential and strengthening the community. The fund remains one of the most important projects of G-Eazy's multi-faceted career.

"We all know G by his music, but we also know that he is Oakland through and through," said Oakland Roots and Oakland Soul CMO Edreece Arghandiwal. "Throughout his entire career he has made it a point to take Oakland and the Bay Area to the Universe. Music is an important part of our culture, and we are excited to have G not only deepen our connection in that space, but we hope to deepen our connection to Oakland, together. We are hella juiced to have G join the ownership group."

Oakland Roots was launched in 2019 with the Purpose "to harness the magic of Oakland and the power of sports as a force for social good." The club's commitment to advancing social justice has been central to its emergence as one of the fastest-growing brands in American sports. Roots SC is the first and only American club to join the global Common Goal movement, led by some of the world's top athletes, and in 2021 helped catalyze the groundbreaking Anti-Racist Project, the first project to tackle systemic racism at all levels of US soccer. Roots is also a member of the Anti-Racist Soccer Club collective, and was awarded the Anti-Racism Impact Award by the USL in 2021. In 2022 Roots partnered with Common Goal once again to launch the Play Proud project to make soccer a more inclusive place for all. The club is also committed to advancing race and gender equity through its philanthropic Justice Fund. Oakland Roots have also committed to being carbon-neutral by the end of 2022 and promotes financial literacy and investment to youth of color in Oakland alongside many other community programs.

A fiercely-proud Oaklander, G-Eazy is the latest Town legend to join the club's mission to give back to Oakland after former NFL star-turned-entrepreneur Marshawn Lynch joined the ownership group in 2021. To Celebrate, Oakland Roots and G-Eazy will release a limited edition collaboration that will drop exclusively at the last home game of the season, on October 1, 2022.
