Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. -Brad Voyles struck out seven and combined with two other Omaha pitchers on a six-hit, 4-0 shutout over the Portland Beavers Thursday night at PGE Park.
After splitting the series with the Royals, the Beavers (22-26) concluded their homestand at 3-5.
The Royals (20-28) got on the board in the first as Rick Short's sacrifice fly scored Gookie Dawkins in the opening inning.
Omaha plated an unearned run in the third and took advantage of another error in the sixth to go up 3-0 on Alexis Gomez' RBI double.
Dawkins hit a solo home run off starter Matt Bruback (1-6) in the seventh for a 4-0 lead.
The Beavers had runners on second and third in the second inning and started the seventh with a double by Joe Gerber, but they were shut out for the second time this season.
Xavier Nady was 3-for-4 with a double for the Beavers, who are 12-12 at home.
Voyles worked the first 5.0 innings, allowing three runs to improve to 3-2. Mike Venafro pitched the sixth and seventh and Shawn Camp worked the final two innings for the Royals.
