Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Beavers announced today that outfielder Jon Knott has had his contract purchased by the San Diego Padres, first baseman Tagg Bozied has been activated from the disabled list and outfielder Freddy Guzman has been transferred to Portland from Class AA Mobile.
Knott, 25, batted .308 with 13 home runs and a league-leading 47 RBIs in 43 games with the Beavers. At the time of the promotion, the first of his three-year career, Knott was tied for third in the Pacific Coast League in homers and was fourth in extra-base hits (26).
The outfielder compiled two separate 10-game hitting streaks over the last three weeks and hit safely in 20 of his last 22 games with the Beavers.
Signed as a non-drafted free agent on September 21, 2001, Knott was named San Diego's co-Minor League Player of the Year after his first professional season in 2002. In 307 minor league games, Knott has hit .301 with 89 doubles, 52 home runs and 225 RBIs. He appeared in 19 games for the Padres during 2004 spring training, batting .407 (11-for-27) with three doubles, two homers and five RBIs.
Knott joined the Padres in Milwaukee on Friday and took the roster spot of outfielder Ryan Klesko, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 27) with a strained oblique.
Bozied, 24, missed 37 games with a hamstring injury that put him on the DL on April 19 (retroactive to April 18). He batted .314 with two homers and five RBIs in 10 games to start the season for Portland.
A third-round selection of the Padres in the 2001 draft, Bozied spent the entire season with the Beavers in 2003, batting .273 with 14 home runs and 59 RBIs in his first Triple-A campaign.
Guzman, 23, batted .283 with a home run, seven RBIs and 17 stolen bases in 35 games with Mobile to start the year.
Guzman, the Padres' No. 3 prospect according to Baseball America, paced all minor leaguers with 90 stolen bases in 2003, tallied at three different levels of the San Diego system, including three steals in two games played with Portland at the end of the season. Guzman has led the Padres organization in stolen bases each of the last two seasons and has 205 in 303 games played for his five-year career.
The Padres originally signed Guzman as a non-drafted free agent prior to the 2000 season.
The Beavers now have a full complement of 24 players on their active roster.
