The Montreal Expos today recalled first baseman Nick Johnson and right-handed pitcher Tony Armas Jr. from rehab assignments. The club then reinstated Johnson from the 15-Day Disabled List and optioned outfielder Valentino Pascucci to Triple-A Edmonton. Vice President and General Manager Omar Minaya made the announcements.

Acquired from New York (AL) on December 4, Johnson joins the Expos for the first time since being placed on the 15-Day DL on April 3 (retroactive to March 31) with a lumbar strain.

Johnson, 25, went 6-for-30 (.200) with a double, home run, 5 RBI and eight walks during his nine-game rehab assignment with Brevard County (six games) of the Single-A Florida State League and Edmonton (three games) of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League.

Armas Jr., who has not been reinstated from the Disabled List, was placed on the 15-Day DL on April 3 with a strained-right rotator cuff. He last pitched in a major league game on April 20, 2003 vs. Cincinnati (in Puerto Rico).

Armas Jr. had surgery performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles, CA on May 23, 2003 to repair the labrum in the right shoulder. The 26-year-old went 0-1 with a 4.19 ERA (9 ER/19.1 IP) in five rehab starts for Brevard County (three starts) and Edmonton (two starts).

Pascucci, 25, went 5-for-23 (.217) with two RBI and four walks in 12 games with the Expos after being recalled on April 26.
