Nwogu's Late Home Run Lifts Pelicans to Victory over Hillcats
September 4, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans just edged out the Lynchburg Hillcats 2-1 on an eighth-inning home run by Jordan Nwogu on Saturday night. The win gives the Birds a three-game to two lead in the series and moves them back over .500 at 54-53. Lynchburg falls to 52-55 with the loss. Saturday night was also "Recovery Awareness Night presented by A Palm State of Mind," as the Pelicans wore specialty jerseys that were auctioned off during the game.
12 hits turned into just two runs as Nwogu (4-4, HR, 2 RBI) joined Ed Howard as the only two Pelicans to collect four hits in one game. Owen Caissie (2-4) and Jonathan Sierra (2-4) also posted multi-hit performances.
In his Pelicans debut, Luis Rodriguez (1-0) picked up the win with two solid innings out of the bullpen with four strikeouts. Daniel Palencia started the game and tossed five innings of one-run baseball with six strikeouts.
Lynchburg only managed to post four hits with two coming from Gabriel Rodriguez (2-4, HR, RBI). His home run in the fourth was the only run of the game for the Hillcats.
Hugo Villalobos (0-2) gave up the solo shot to Nwogu and took the loss after recording just one out. Juan Zapata started the game and lasted five innings with one earned run off eight hits. He also struck out five with no walks.
The home team jumped on the board first as Howard singled and moved to second on a groundout by Kevin Made in the bottom of the third. Howard advanced to third on a wild pitch by Zapata and came home on Nwogu's first single to go up 1-0. Caissie reached on a fielder's choice right after and tried to go from first to home on Sierra's single but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
It was a quick response from Lynchburg as Gabriel Rodriguez led off the fourth with a solo shot to right to tie things up 1-1. Micael Ramirez hit a double one at-bat later but was stranded at third to end the inning.
Both teams were silent up until the final blow in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Nwogu drove a 2-2 pitch from Villalobos over the left-field wall for his 10th home run of the season as the Pelicans went up 2-1.
Luis Rodriguez retired the Hillcats in order to secure the win.
Sunday's series finale is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start time with a Munnerlyn Pyrotechnics fireworks extravaganza planned afterward for a Labor Day Celebration.
