Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports bullpen has come up big on many occasions this season, but it was not the case on Monday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Stockton saw a 2-1 lead evaporate over the seventh and eighth innings as the Modesto Nuts scored four runs in their final two innings, sending the Ports to their second straight loss by a final of 5-2.
The Ports scored their only two runs of the contest in the first inning. Coco Crisp, in his first game of a Major League rehab assignment, drew a walk to open the frame. Brett Vertigan and Tyler Maricov followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. After Matt Chapman popped out to the infield, Jake Nottingham hit a sac-fly to right to score Crisp and give the Ports a 1-0 lead. On the sac-fly, Vertigan tagged and went to third and scored on a passed ball charged to Nuts catcher Wilfredo Rodriguez to make it a 2-0 lead.
Following Marincov's first-inning single, Nuts starter Konner Wade (6-6) would go on to retire 23 of the final 26 batters he faced, including 13-in-a-row that took him through the seventh inning. He went on to earn the win, going seven-and-two-thirds innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two.
Ports starter Raul Alcantara retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced to open his night before surrendering his second double of the night to Dillon Thomas with one out in the fourth. Ryan McMahon followed with an RBI single to center to cut the Ports lead to 2-1. It was the only run allowed by Alcantara, who did not factor into the decision after allowing one run on three hits while striking out two in four innings pitched.
After Sam Roberts pitched two scoreless innings beginning in the fifth, Joel Seddon (7-6) took over to pitch the seventh. After retiring the first batter, Seddon gave up a double to Drew Weeks and then a two-run homer to Ashley Graeter, his first of the season, to give the Nuts a 3-2 lead. Those were the only runs allowed by Seddon, who suffered the loss after one inning of relief.
Modesto added to its lead in the eighth facing Ben Bracewell. After two walks and a single, Modesto loaded the bases with one out. Bracewell would get a strikeout of Weeks, but then surrender a two-out, two-run single to Graeter that stretch the Nuts lead to 5-2.
Stockton had a final push in the eighth. Trent Gilbert opened the inning with a single, his first hit with Stockton. Two batters later, B.J. Boyd, batting in place of Crisp, singled to put two aboard. After Wade retired Vertigan, he was lifted for Troy Neiman (SV, 3), who got Marincov, the potential-tying run, to pop out to first to end the threat.
Neiman went on to set th side down in order in the ninth to notch his third save of the season.
The Ports and Nuts play the middle game of their three-game set on Tuesday at Banner Island Ballpark. Left-hander Chris Lamb (0-1, 4.26 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Johendi Jiminian (3-8, 4.46 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
