San Jose Giants News Release
VISALIA, CA - Brandon Bednar hit a go-ahead RBI double before Ty Ross smacked a two-run homer to highlight a four-run top of the 10th inning in San Jose's 9-5 victory over the Visalia Rawhide on Monday evening at Recreation Park. San Jose rallied from a late 4-0 deficit, tying the game in the eighth before both teams scored single runs in the ninth. The Giants then took the lead for good with their outburst in the top of the 10th en route to claiming the opener of the three-game series.
With the win, San Jose improves their overall record to 50-50. It marks the first time since the opening week of the season (April 12, 2-2 record) that the Giants have been at the .500 mark. San Jose has won 16 out of their last 19 games overall.
Bednar (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) and Ross (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) both finished with two hits and two RBI's to lead the offensive attack. Daniel Carbonell (2-for-3, 2B, 3 RBI) added a pair of hits and drove home one run in each of the last three innings. Jeff Kobernus (2-for-4, SB) and Brian Ragira (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) also contributed two hits apiece.
San Jose managed only one hit over the first six innings as Visalia built a 4-0 lead. The Giants comeback then began in the top of the seventh. Still facing Rawhide starter Blake Perry, the rally started with a one-out double to deep right center from Ragira. Then with two outs, Bednar blooped a single into shallow center plating Ragira with the first San Jose run of the night.
The Giants then tied the game with a three-run top of the eighth. A walk to Kobernus started the inning before Christian Arroyo singled into center. Carbonell was up next and he doubled down the right field line to score Kobernus and advance Arroyo to third. Angel Villalona followed with an RBI groundout as Arroyo scored trimming the Visalia lead to 4-3. Then after a walk to Tyler Horan, Ragira stepped to the plate and lined an RBI single into left as Carbonell came home to make it 4-4. San Jose had an opportunity to take the lead later in the frame as the bases were loaded with two outs, but Ross struck out to end the inning.
Jake Smith entered from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the eighth and pitched around a one-out single as the Rawhide left a runner at third. The Giants then manufactured a run in the top of the ninth. Kobernus led off with a single up the middle before moving to second on a balk. Arroyo followed with a sacrifice bunt and then Carbonell hit a sacrifice fly to center plating Kobernus to give San Jose a 5-4 lead.
Smith returned to the mound in the bottom of the ninth, but Visalia mounted their own rally scoring a run without the benefit of a hit to tie the game. Mitch Haniger walked to leadoff and then stole second with one out. Jamie Westbrook was up next and his sharp grounder to shortstop glanced off of Arroyo's glove and into shallow left center. The error allowed Haniger to score from second base tying the game 5-5. Westbrook was safe at first on the play, but was later thrown out at second by Ross attempting to steal.
The Giants then erupted in the top of the 10th scoring four times to move in front by a 9-5 margin. After Ragira struck out, Seth Harrison grounded a single into right. Harrison then stole second and immediately scored the go-ahead run when the next batter, Bednar, laced a double into the right center field gap. The rally continued when Ross followed by blasting a 2-2 pitch over the fence in right center for an opposite field two-run homer. The home run, Ross' third of the season, pushed the lead to 8-5.
San Jose added another run in the 10th as Kobernus walked, stole second, moved to third when the throw bounced into center and scored on Carbonell's two-out single.
Dan Slania (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) finished the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th inning. Slania needed just six pitches to set down the Rawhide in order.
Smith (4-2) was credited with the win after working the eighth and ninth innings for the Giants. The right-hander allowed one hit and one unearned run. He walked two and struck out two.
Johnny Shuttlesworth (2-2), who surrendered all four runs in the top of the 10th, suffered the loss.
The Giants' only hit over the first six frames against Perry was a fourth-inning single from Kobernus. Jose Reyes started on the mound for San Jose and tossed 5 2/3 innings with four runs (all earned) and nine hits allowed. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Visalia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on doubles from Alex Glenn and Kevin Medrano before Haniger's two-run homer in the third pushed their advantage to 3-0. The Rawhide added another run against Reyes in the fourth on three consecutive one-out singles.
Leading 4-0, Visalia had an opportunity to blow the game open in the bottom of the sixth as an error followed by two singles loaded the bases with none out. However, Reyes induced back-to-back pop outs before Tyler Rogers (1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) entered from the bullpen and struck out Haniger to retire the side. Rogers then pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh before the Giants tied the game in the eighth.
