Bakersfield Blaze News Release
On a pleasant Monday evening, the Bakersfield Blaze went hit-happy, tying their season high with 15 hits en route to a cruising 11-5 victory over the visiting High Desert Mavericks at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
The story of the night was offense, as the pitching portion of the ledger was strikingly simple for the Blaze.
Eddie Campbell (W, 4-5) got the start and threw the ball effectively. The lefty went 6.0 innings for the first time in his last eight starts and allowed three runs, a quality effort that would be well beyond strong enough to net Campbell a victory.
Emilio Pagan (S, 4) scuffled a bit in the 8th inning, but worked the final three frames for the elusive three-inning save, wrapping up the win.
Offensively, the story was much more complex. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st, the Blaze slammed out five runs on six hits, with Tyler O'Neill's run-scoring double, Daniel Torres' RBI single and Austin Wilson's three-run homer producing runs.
Just one inning later, the Blaze added three more when O'Neill slammed his 20th homer of the year off the sunscreen beyond the centerfield wall and Rayder Ascanio got in on the act with a sacrifice fly. The first two innings gave Bakersfield a lead of 8-1, and the team had a few left in the tank.
O'Neill doubled and scored on a bases-loaded walk of Nelson Ward in the 4th, and a walk of Jay Baum in the 5th was followed by an Aaron Barbosa double and a combination infield hit and error to plate the team's final two runs en route to an easy win.
The Blaze improve to 3-2 on the homestand, and O'Neill moves into 3rd place in the league with the 20-homer mark with two more games here in Bakersfield before the club hits the road.
The series with High Desert continues on Tuesday at 7:45pm as Richelson Pena goes against Scott DeCecco on ScholarShare Family $20 Tuesday. Gates open at 6:45pm.
