
Nunez Powers Coyotes Past Dillas

AMARILLO, Texas- Argelis Nunez hit two home runs which helped the Edinburg Coyotes win game one of the double header against the Amarillo Dillas 9-4 Tuesday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa. With the win, the Coyotes tied the Laredo Broncos, who lost Tuesday night, for the fourth spot in the standings. Miguel Martinez (6-3) picked up his sixth win of the year after pitching five and 1/3 innings and allowing four earned runs on four hits and striking out four. Angelo Fermin quickly gave the Martinez the lead in the first inning after he hit his second home run of the season off of Dillas starter Marcos Castillo. Then with two outs, Nunez extended the Coyotes lead to 2-0 with his 10th home run of the season. The solo blast by Nunez was his first with the Coyotes since joining the team. After walking the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning, Martinez was one strike away from getting out of the bases loaded jam. Sam Mclain then hit a two out double that scored two runs for the Dillas which tied the game at 2-2. But the Coyotes regained the lead against Castillo in the top of the third inning as they sent eight hitters to the plate. The offense scored four runs on four hits which made the score 6-2.
The Dillas scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning which cut the Coyotes' lead to two. Gary Schneidmiller scored on a wild pitch by reliever Julio Castro which made the score 6-3. Then A.J. Johnson scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Justin Wenger which put the score at 6-4. But Nunez extended the lead for the Coyotes with his second home run of the game. After Daryl Jones walked, Nunez hit his 11th home run of the season which made the score 8-4. The Coyotes added another run on a sacrifice fly by Brandon McConnell which scored Eric Gonzalez from third to put the final score at 9-4. Julio Castro pitched an inning and 1/3 to pick up his eighth save of the season. Castro allowed no runs on one hit and he struck out two. The Coyotes will travel to San Angelo for a three game series starting on Wednesday night. Then after the series in San Angelo the Coyotes will travel back to Amarillo for another three game series at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.
