
Roadrunners drop heart-breaker

AMARILLO, TEXAS ---- The Edinburg Roadrunners' postseason came to an end with a 12-11 loss against the Amarillo Dillas Thursday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.
The Roadrunners got the scoring started in the top of the third after Cameron McGuire led off with a walk. He then came around to score the first run of the game on an RBI double by Wilmer Pino. Vincent Blue followed with a single to left that allowed Pino to move to third but Amarillo third baseman Angel Reyes misplayed the throw from the outfield and that allowed Pino to score. After moving to second on the error, Blue then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hector Garanzuay and then Sergio Guerrero hit a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Blue to score giving Edinburg the early 3-0.
In the top of the fourth inning McGuire hit a single to left field then was safe at second after an error on a fielder's choice by Pino. After a walk to Garanzuay to load the bases, Guerrero hit a two-run single to left field that allowed McGuire and Pino to score extending the Roadrunner's lead 5-0.
The Dillas got within one after a grand slam from Eric Brown in the bottom of the fourth against Edinburg start Miguel Martinez making it a 5-4 game.
Amarillo tied things in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Reyes that allowed Stantrel Smith to score from third making it a 5-5 score.
In the top of the sixth McGuire hit a double down the first base line and then Pino was hit by a pitch putting runners at first and second for Blue who then hit an infield single to load the bases. Garanzuay followed with an RBI single to center field that drove in McGuire for the first run of the inning. Guerrero and Hunter Owen each hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Pino and Blue to score giving the Roadrunners the 8-5 lead.
Keanon Simon hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth that allowed Justin Wenger and Willie James to score cutting Edinburg's lead to 8-7.
Against Pedro Flores in the bottom of the seventh Terrance McClain drew a walk and then Reyes hit an RBI double to left center field that allowed McClain to score from first to tie things at eight. Trent Lockwood followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that allowed Reyes to score. After walks to Wenger and James, Simon hit an RBI double to right field that drove in Wenger from second giving Amarillo the 10-8 advantage.
The Dillas scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by McClain that allowed Stantrel Smith to score extending their lead to 11-8.
There was a 55 minute rain delay in the top of the ninth but after played resumed the Roadrunners started the inning with two singles by Owen and Robert Matlock. Bryon Smith then followed with a walk to load the bases and after one out McGuire hit a two-run single to get Edinburg within one run. With two outs in the inning, Blue hit an RBI single to center field that allowed McGuire to score from second tying things at 11.
In the bottom of the 10th inning the Dillas loaded the bases for Brown who drew a walk against Edinburg reliever Adrian Garza that allowed Stantrel Smith to come in and score giving Amarillo the 12-11 victory and eliminating the Roadrunners from the 2009 playoffs.
Albert Ayala picked up the win for Amarillo after pitching a perfect top of the 10th and Brian Martin got the loss after walking the go ahead run in the bottom of the 10th.
The Dillas will meet the San Angelo Colts for the United League Championship series starting Friday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.
