September 4, 2009 - United League Baseball (ULB)
San Angelo Colts News Release

Amarillo, Texas---In game one of the best-of-five, for the United League Championship, the Colts (2-1) surrendered six runs in the eighth to fall to the Dillas (3-1) 8-2. Amarillo leads the series 1-0 which snapped San Angelo's three game winning streak.

The pitching matchup in game one pitted Dillas left-hander, Dustin Taylor (4-7), against Colts righty Chandler Barnard (9-5). Both hurlers were making their first starts of the post season.

Barnard lasted six innings and squandered only two runs; Taylor survived 5.2 frames even though he gave up eight walks. Amarillo's southpaw only let two runners come home.

The key was the bullpen. Albert Ayala (2-0) earned a win for the second consecutive night. Ayala tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Tom Martin (0-1) suffered the loss as he was the victim of five Dillas runs in .2 frames of work. Amarillo struck with a run in the bottom of the first. Terrance McClain sent home Stantrel Smith from second base with a ground ball up the middle. Through one complete inning, Dillas led by a run.

Scoring ceased from that point on until the top of the fifth inning. Ronnie Gaines reached first base after a fielders choice. Gaines was in motion, a single to left-center by Hunter Jobes placed the outfield tandem at first and third base. A walk to Rich Paz loaded the bags. Bryan Frichter earned the same result, a bases-loaded walk tied the game at one. Ducks were still on the pond for Selwyn Langaigne. He sent a shallow single to left-center which brought in Gaines and gave San Angelo it's first lead of the contest, 2-1.

The Dillas responded in the sixth frame. With runners at the corners and two away, Willie James sent a single to right, Trent Lockwood crossed home plate, that was the final batter Chandler Barnard would face as the game was tied at two.

Amarillo charged ahead with six runs in the eighth. With one out, Eric Brown and Justin Wenger walked before James singled to fill the bases. Keanon Simon and Smith scorched two-run singles. A runner was on second when Carlos Figueroa appeared to have doubled to right before he was called out at first base on a challenge; Figueroa missed the base. On that play, Smith came to the plate. McClain reached on an error by Butch Ballez, Trent Lockwood walked and Angel Reyes delivered an RBI double to left. It was 8-2 Amarillo which turned out to be the final count.

Playoff action continues tomorrow night at the Dilla Villa for game two of the best-of-five. The contest is set for 7:05 P.M. with the Kemps Ice cream pre-game show expected at 6:50.
