Northcraft, Braves Shut Out Smokies

PEARL, MS -- Aaron Northcraft held the Tennessee Smokies to four hits and Shae Simmons notched his Southern League-leading 11th save as the Mississippi Braves secured a 2-0 victory Friday night at Trustmark Park. The series continues with game three Saturday at 11:00 AM.

Mississippi (22-19) scored two runs on four hits while Tennessee (23-18) managed just five hits. Northcraft (4-2) worked six frames for the Braves, limiting Tennessee to just four hits and three walks. He struck out five batters to notch the win.

Shae Simmons (S, 11) came on in the ninth and struck out the side to notch the save.

The M-Braves took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Elmer Reyes singled and moved to third on two groundouts. He then came in to score on a wild pitch.

Seth Loman walked to start the sixth and Reyes reached on an error by the shortstop. Kyle Kubitza then grounded into a force out, allowing Loman to move over to third. A wild pitch brought Loman in to score, extending the M-Braves lead to 2-0.

Corey Black (2-4) went 5.1 innings for the Smokies. He gave up two earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six batters.

The M-Braves send right-hander David Bromberg (2-2, 1.59) to the hill in game three of a five-game series at Trustmark Park Saturday. He'll counter Smokies righty Matt Loosen (2-2, 5.97). First pitch is slated for 11:00 AM. Gates open at 10:00 AM.

The annual Pearl Day Festival will also take place in the Trustmark Park parking lot from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM followed by a free concert from Rodney Atkins at 7:00 PM.
