Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. - The Generals (17-23) got back on the winning track as they defeated the Montgomery Biscuits (21-19) 8-2 in the series opener in Jackson on Thursday. Ketel Marte (2x4, 2 R, 4 RBI) impressed as he went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and four RBIs. Nate Melendres (2x4, 3 RBI) added two hits and three RBIs. Rain delayed the game in the third inning for 47 minutes, but it didn't stop the Generals from picking up a much needed win.
Patrick Kivlehan (2x4, R), Kevin Rivers (2x4, R) and Manny Pina (1x4, R) each singled to lead off the second for Jackson. With no outs and the bases loaded, Mickey Wiswall (1x4, R) popped out and Mike Dowd (0x3, BB) struck out and things didn't look promising for the Generals. But, Jack Marder (1x2, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB) walked to score Kivlehan, then Marte singled home Rivers and Pina making the score 3-0 in the second inning.
Marder and Marte scored on a slow rolling single up the middle by Melendres to make the score 5-0 after the second.
Jackson's hot bats continued two innings later. Wiswall doubled to lead off the fourth and scored with Marder on Marte's first triple of the season. Melendres singled home Marte and Jackson led 8-0 after four innings.
Montgomery got two runs back in the fifth. With one out and one on Riccio Torrez doubled to score Luke Maile. Torrez then scored one batter later on Joey Rickard's single to cut the Jackson lead to 8-2.
Jackson starter Tyler Olson (1-1, 5.06) had an impressive five innings of work. Olson retired 11 Biscuits in a row at one point and gave up just two runs on four hits to pick up his first Double-A win. Jared Mortensen (4-1, 5.06) suffered the loss. It was the first time Montgomery lost this season when Mortensen started on the mound.
The Generals and Biscuits will play game two of this five game series on Friday in Jackson. Matt Anderson (0-1, 24.30) will get the start for the Generals and Montgomery will start Victor Mateo (5-3, 3.38). It's Flat Screen Friday with a lucky fan leaving with a brand new 50 inch TV. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
